Reverberations

Reverberations looks at the ways memory and identity are continually reconstituted and how they shape and impinge upon each other. It uses the personal experience of growing up in Italian and Anglo Australian cultures to examine the changing nature of memory and how events of the past can form and transform identity. It also explores the ways ethnic groups negotiate between community and national identity. Deleuze and Guattari's concepts of the rhizome, the refrain and territorialisation are applied as keys to understanding practices associated with memory and identity. The way nostalgia and loss are tangled with memory and identity are considered along with how cultural memory can be manifested in the body through gestures, performance and everyday practices. The mediation of memory by films photographs and objects is also examined. As the process of thinking and remembering is never a smooth, logically flowing stream of intelligence, so this wok assembles disparate events, facts, reflection and analysis. The work will be useful to researchers in the fields of cultural studies, memory and cultural diversity.
