Reviewing Tribes of India

The book presents a systematic and comprehensive overview of the tribes in India. The evolution of the tribes beginning from the colonial period, across the years in the post-independent period and till date is captured. The state of isolation of the tribals, their deprivation, their struggle to protect their rights, the demographic features, their life and livelihood, cultural heritage and how they are in the state of transition in recent times is penned in details. The social aspects like the status of education and health in their community is analyzed with respect to recent data. Even the impact of the recent ongoing pandemic on this marginalized class has been discussed. As India is witnessing change in social, political and economic spheres, the Indian tribes have been studied in the context of changing political and social identity, gender, caste dimensions, development issues. The different initiatives on the part of the government for the development of the disadvantaged tribals has been debated. Also new perspective on tribes is offered to accommodate the diversity and transformations within their culture over time and through globalization.

Dr. Sumitra Naha (Das) ist Assistenzprofessorin in der Abteilung für Wirtschaftswissenschaften, Siliguri Mahila Mahabidyalaya in Westbengalen, Indien. Sie erwarb ihren Doktortitel an der Jadavpur Universität. Ihre Forschungsinteressen liegen in den Bereichen Finanzwirtschaft, Entwicklungsökonomie und Gender Economics. Sie hat drei Bücher verfasst und mehrere Forschungsartikel in renommierten Fachzeitschriften veröffentlicht.
