This volume offers a critical insight into the life and work of the controversial Victorian explorer and translator Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890). It investigates Burton's significant contribution to ongoing contemporary debates through an analysis of a selection of his travel accounts and his erotic translations, with particular reference to his re-elaboration of dominant discourses on race, gender and sexuality.
