Rob Wainwright (born 1967 in Carmarthen, Wales) is the current director of Europol. After having graduated in 1989 from the London School of Economics, Wainwright joined the Civil Service, where he worked in law enforcement, combatting organised crime, counter-terrorism and intelligence analysis. In 2000 Wainwright joined Europol for the first time, heading the Liaison Bureau of the United Kingdom. Two years later, having received a promotion, he joined the National Criminal Intelligence Service, overseeing international operations and developing and implementing strategies against illegal immigration. Wainwright joined theSerious Organised Crime Agency in 2006 as Chief of the International Department. In April 2009 Wainwright succeeded Max-Peter Ratzel as Director of Europol.
