Can photograhic portraits being a mirror and analysis of a layered Society? A study of Roger Ballen's portraits of South African population follows on the heels of this question.Through a contextualisation and visual analysis from an anthropological perspective, this essay tries to depict the artculated evolution of Roger Ballen's Photography within the South African context. Roger Ballen (b.1950) is a Photographer, director and visual artist. He studied Geology and Psychology at Berkley University. Since 1982 he lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Zaira Perina (b.1991), studied Cinema and visual Arts disciplines at University of Bologna, where she graduated in 2014. She has been living in Copenhagen and Istanbul, and she is currently a student of Mres Moving Image at Central Saint Martins College London.
