Rotordynamics of Automotive Turbochargers
Details
This book explores the rotordynamics of automotive turbochargers, which encompasses analysis of the dynamics of machines rotating at very high speeds. Benefits both working practioners and graduate students in mechanical engineering.
This book deals with rotordynamics of automotive turbochargers while encompassing the analysis of the dynamics of rotating machines at very high rotor speeds of 300,000 rpm and above. This interdisciplinary field involves 1. thermodynamics and turbo-matching knowledge to compute working conditions of turbochargers, 2. fluid and bearing dynamics to calculate various operating thrust loads and to design the rotating floating ring bearings (two-oil-film bearings), and 3. tribology to improve the rotor stability and to reduce the bearing friction. Mathematical background in modeling and simulation methods is necessary; however, the prerequisites have been kept to a minimum. The book addresses both practitioners working in the field of rotordynamics of automotive turbochargers and graduate students in mechanical engineering.
Describes the rotordynamics of automotive turbochargers Requires only a minimum of mathematical background Written by an R&D expert from industry
Autorentext
Dr. Hung Nguyen-Schaefer is a senior expert in rotor-dynamics and bearing designs of turbochargers at Bosch Mahle Turbo Systems (BMTS) in Germany. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in mechanical engineering with nonlinear vibrations in fluid mechanics from the University of Karlsruhe, Germany in 1985, and his Ph.D. in nonlinear thermo- and fluid dynamics from the same university. In 1988 he joined Bosch company, and worked as technical manager on many development projects of anti-lock braking and traction systems, high-pressure fuel injection systems, combustion engine systems, fluid cavitation, and electric turbochargers for automotive fuel cells (PEMFC). Since 2007 Dr. Nguyen-Schaefer has been in charge of rotordynamics and bearing design of automotive turbochargers at BMTS located in Stuttgart, the joint venture of Bosch and Mahle. He has much experience in the fuel injection systems of gasoline, diesel, compressed natural gas (CNG), automotive turbochargers, rotordynamics, and bearing designs.
