Rua Lisboa (Portuguese meaning Lisbon, also in the Capeverdean Crioulo forms of ALUPEC or ALUPEK and the São Vicente Crioulo) is an street running from Avenida Marginal to the Palácio do Governador. The street is one of the main streets in the city and is in the downtown core, it is about 200 m long and is run one way eastbound. It also serves the main branch with the road to Baía das Gatas. The street begins by the Mindelo Bay at Avenida Marginal, it features residential homes with colonial and modern architecture. It also features shops, restaurants and taverns. A hill overlooks to the northwest. The historic Palácio do Governador is at the eastern end of the street, and it overlooks a hill. The avenue formerly featured a bank known as the Banco Nacional Ultramarino in which it closed when Cape Verde became an independent country in July 5, 1975. The avenue was paved in the mid to late 20th century and it always featured lampposts but no stoplights.
