He is considered to be one of the most important figures in the history of dance. Rudolf von Laban was born in 1879 in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, into an aristocratic family. His father''s family had originated in France, and his mother''s family was from England. His father was a field marshal of the Hapsburg Empire and the governor of the provinces of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
