The Soviet Union and the United Arab Emirates established diplomatic relations on 8 December 1971. In 1986, the Soviet embassy in Abu Dhabi was opened, and in 1987 the United Arab Emirates embassy in Moscow was opened. Russia has an embassy in Abu Dhabi, and the United Arab Emirates has an embassy in Moscow. In 2002, a Russian consulate-general in Dubai was established. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) (Arabic: , Dawlat al-Im r t al- Arab yah al-Mutta idah) is a federation of seven emirates situated in the southeast of the Arabian Peninsula in Southwest Asia on the Persian Gulf, bordering Oman and Saudi Arabia. The UAE consists of seven states, termed emirates, which are Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm al-Quwain, Ras al-Khaimah and Fujairah. The capital and second largest city of the United Arab Emirates is Abu Dhabi. It is also the country's center of political, industrial, and cultural activities.
