It was the birthplace of current[update] President Hugo Chávez. Sabaneta is the capital city of Alberto Arvelo Torrealba municipality in Barines. The city was founded by Juan de Alhama in 1787. The principal industry is sugar production. Estado Barinas is one of the 23 states (estados) into which Venezuela is divided. The state capital is Barinas. Current President Hugo Chávez was born in this state. His brother Adán Chávez is the governor. Barinas State covers a total surface area of 35,200 km² and, in 2007, had an estimated population of 756,600.
