The Sabin Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race for older fillies and mares (four-year-olds and up) and is run at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida. A Grade III stakes race, it''s set at a distance of 1 mile (8 furlongs) on the dirt, and offers a purse of $100,000. The Sabin is named for the multiple Grade I stakes winning filly, Sabin. Born in 1980, she made 25 starts and won 18 of them. Horse racing is an equestrian sport that has been practiced over the centuries; the chariot races of Roman times are an early example, as is the contest of the steeds of the god Odin and the giant Hrungnir in Norse mythology. It is inextricably associated with gambling. The common sobriquet for Thoroughbred horse racing is The Sport of Kings.
