He belongs to Sikar gharana (school) of music who have given several stalwarts to Indian classical music.Born in Jodhpur, Rajasthan to sarangi player and vocalist Ustad Sultan Khan. He trained under his father and his uncle Ustad Nasir khan. He is the ninth generation to take up Sarangi. His great grand father Ustad Azim Khan shaab was a court musician at Sikar Rajasthan. Sabir Khan started was exposed to music when he was six year old through his grand father Ustad Gulab khan. He shares the stage with his father and apart from solo concerts.
