Kumano Hayatama Taisha is one of three Kumano Sanzan shrine/temple sites, and is part of UNESCO designated World Heritage Site "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range". At this Shinto/Buddhist unification site lives the sacred tha t oisnagi tree, a living tree worshipped in the Buddhist religion as being pure and good. The nagi tree, Nageia nagi, is also called the broadleaf podocarpus.
