Sadaejuui is a Korean term derived from the Chinese shi da (Korean, sadae) used by the philosopher, Mencius, which literally means "dealing with the great" or "serving the great" and interpreted as "Loving and admiring the great and powerful". Sadaejuui is a foreign policy or ideology wherein a small country conveys goodwill or homage to a larger country by dispatching envoys to it. The legitimacy of this concept in Korea was recognized from the period of Three Kingdoms of Korea to 1897 and can perhaps be seen most clearly found in the relationship of mid Joseon Korea towards the Ming Dynasty in China. The Joseon kingdom made every effort to maintain a friendly relationship with Beijing for reasons having to do with both realpolitik and a more idealist Confucian worldview wherein China was seen as the center of a Confucian moral universe.
