Ama u is a species of fern in the family Blechnaceae that is endemic to Hawai i. It inhabits lava flows, open areas, and wet forests on all major islands up to an altitude of 1,676 metres (5,499 ft). Reaching a height of 0.9 1.5 metres (3.0 4.9 ft) and a trunk diameter of 7.5 10 centimetres (3.0 3.9 in), ama u resembles a small tree fern. Blechnaceae is a family of nine genera and between 240-260 species of ferns, with a cosmopolitan distribution. Most are ground dwelling, some are climbers, such as Stenochlaena. A characteristic feature of many species is that the young opening fronds are usually tinged with red.
