It is run at Ascot over a distance of 2 miles (3,219 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late April or early May. The event is named after Sagaro, a three-time winner of Ascot's Gold Cup during the 1970s. It was established in 1978, and it was given Group 3 status in 1983. Several horses have won both the Sagaro Stakes and the Gold Cup, and the most recent to achieve this in the same season was Double Trigger in 1995.
