The word "Sagdid" means glance of the dog, "Sag" meaning "dog" and "-did" meaning "to see". The Vendidad speaks of different kinds of dogs such as the shepherd's dog, house-dog and hunting dog. Additionally, it also regards the hedgehog and the tortoise to be dogs. The hedgehog, mentioned as Vanghâpara, is regarded as a good creature which kills thousands of evil beings. It's murder is a sin punishable with eternal doom and one who murders a Vanghâpara dog had to atone with a sacrifice to Sraosha.
