High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The second extrasolar X-ray source in the constellation Sagittarius detected by a research group at the Naval Research Laboratory using an Aerobee 150 sounding rocket was designated Sagittarius XR-2, or Sgr XR-2. The Aerobee 150 was launched on June 16, 1964, from the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, USA. During a rocket flight on October 1, 1964, Sgr XR-2 (J1950 RA 18h 10m Dec -17° 06 ) appeared to be composed of two nearly equal sources (2nd source: J1950 RA 18h 11m Dec -17° 12 ). Sgr XR-2 is at J2000 RA 18h 14m 31.5s Dec -17° 09 27 . The 2nd source converts approximately to J2000 RA 18h 14m Dec -17° 12 and is ~290 arcseconds (asec) from Sgr XR-2. Sgr XR-2 is ~2° from Messier 17.
