With the exception of 1904 and possible 1916 sailing was always a part of the Olympic program. The Sailing program of 1896 consisted of one day of racing in probably one class (discipline) of the coast of Piraeus, Greece.The weaterforcast promised nice weather for April 1st. A cold, dry wind was blowing and Athens was covered in a dust cloud. On the program for that day were rowing and a regatta with boats of the Royal Navy.
