High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Sainbari incident occurred in March 1970 at Bardhaman in West Bengal in India, where several people were hacked to death, allegedly by CPI(M) supporters. A newspaper report puts the date of the incident as 17 March 1970. The Sain brothers were large zamindar and jotedars and were resisting the land reforms movement led by the CPI(M) peasant wing. They were known to have strong allegiance towards the Indian National Congress. While a local squad from a ward in the Bardhaman town was in front of the Sainbari, the squad was attacked from the Sainbari with bombs and boiling water was poured on the squad of the peasants. The squad members got infuriated and went inside the Sainbari and some members of the Sain family were killed, as they were known to be Congress leaders opposing the land reforms movement by force. Indira Gandhi, then Prime Minister of India, had visited the house in the heart of Bardhaman town to console the bereaved.
