This book is an extension of a case study carried out with a socially disadvantaged student, whose peculiar story leads him to a public university, and on this path he finds the possibility of joining an exchange programme in Ohio. However, the social circumstances, family and cultural arrangements that permeated her life did not allow her to take advantage of this opportunity that had arisen in her life.

Pâmella Alves, born in the city of Nepomuceno, joined the Federal University of São João del-Rei in 2012 and is currently a postgraduate master's student at the same institution. Her own experiences fuelled the writing of this book, which ended up blending into the lives of the people involved.
