Segun Adeku
Details
Documentation, studies and criticisms of African arts belong to the recent past. Judging a work of art from another culture without taking into account its contents and contexts constitutes a rupture of the genetic relationship between works of art, the artist the society that produces them. This book focuses on the life and artistry of an African Neo-traditional master craftsman- artist of Yoruba extraction, and a virtuoso of his arts - Segun Adeku whose creative background, endeavor, philosophy, ideology and views about the society defined his artistic styles and techniques. Adeku is preoccupied with forms and hues to express Yoruba folklores, tales, traditions, and stories that preach love, life and harmonious living. This book is neither definitive nor exhaustive in Adeku's documentation, but to serve as an insight into Adeku's artistry, his sociological make-up before it disappears out of trace. A foundation to other critical studies of the artist!
