Self-care practices in people with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Nursing as a science of care focuses on human beings throughout their life cycle, whether in situations of health or acute or chronic illness. Dorothea Orem's Nursing Support-Education System favours clinical and educational nursing care based on self-care, understood as the practice of activities performed by the individual for their own benefit, in order to maintain life, health and well-being. The development of self-care skills is recommended in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus in order to achieve an adequate metabolic control, preventing the occurrence of complications and acquiring quality of life. Ante a problemática deste adoecimento crônico e as possibilidades de cuidado da enfermagem objetivou-se: conhecer as práticas de autocuidado desenvolvidas por pessoas com Diabetes Mellitus tipo 2 acompanhadas em um serviço de atenção secundária de saúde e suas implicações para o cuidado clínico e educativo da enfermagem. Este material trata-se de estudo descritivo e transversal realizado em serviço de atenção secundária em Fortaleza-CE-Brasil.
