Sambraus, A Pocket Compendium of Rare Useful Animals 240 Endangered Breeds from Around the World Useful animal breeds are a cultural heritage: the specialisation and optimisation of agricultural production has led to a comparatively few, very widely distributed breeds displacing indigenous and locally adapted ones in many places. Accordingly, the aims of biodiversity protection should include domesticated animals as well. These animals are genetically distinct, and their larger and more varied gene pool can contribute to production breeds reacting better to environmental changes. This colour compendium profiles 240 rare cattle, sheep, goat, horse, donkey and pig breeds from all over the world.
