Details

There are two main approaches to the study of spatial
reference. The universal conceptual categories or UCC
claims that the concepts support and inclusion are
universal in spatial reference. The universal
tendencies or UT, however, proposes that the concept
attachment also makes a significant contribution to
spatial reference.
This book, unlike the two approaches, provides a
different perspective in relation with the concepts
relevant to specify the spatial relations. Rongga is
unique since it prioritizes the concept functional
relations over locative relations in describing the
spatial relations between objects. When the natural
function is present the relation is functional.
However, the relation between objects becomes
locative when the natural function is absent.
This book should be useful for Linguistics students
or researchers who are interested in semantic
typology. Since the book also discusses the meanings
of locative prepositions across languages it
should also be useful for anyone who is interested in
translation.
