From the start of the Eastern Front in world war two (1941 45) he was commander of the 30th tank division. Later, he was the deputy commander of the 10th Tank Army, commander of a tank and mechanized corps, commander of the 2nd Tank Army transformed into a Guards Army in November 1944. Units under Semen Bogdanov's command took part in the Battle of Moscow, in the Korsun-Shevchenkovsky, Belarusian, Vistula-Oder, East Pomeranian and Berlin operations.
