Sex-related diseases in ageing population
Details
The global elderly population over 50 years was 606 million in 2002 due to increased life expectancy, and expected to bypass 1.2 billion in year 2050. Most people have the potential to remain sexually active into their old age with sexual activity often considered central to overall well-being. Currently, there is scanty information strategy or policy on interventions targeting this population of elderly infected persons in the country. Hence, the study's main objective was to document the prevalence of HIV and other important STIs (syphilis and Herpes Simplex Virus-2) and to investigate possible associated factors among patients aged 50 years and over within selected Public health facilities in Nairobi, Kenya. A cross-sectional study in 8 randomly selected health facilities from 5 randomly picked sub-Counties was done. Pre-survey for facility monthly reports were used to apportion each facility per Probability Proportion to Size (PPS). All elderly patients 50 years and over were recruited until the respective sample size for the respective facility was attained.
