Details

This book is about the relationship betweenAboriginal People and archaeology in Canada.Aboriginal involvement in Canadian archaeology hasbeen limited by the failure of archaeology toinclude Aboriginal interests within its researchagenda. This failure has been due in part to acolonial bias embedded in the discipline. Manyacademic disciplines have begun to assess the valueof research done "on" Indigenous communities andhave suggested ways that research can be done "by"and "for" these communities with benefits to boththe academic and social causes. Community-basedmethods have been and are being used in Canada, yetwithout much formal discussion or sense of sharedgoals. This thesis suggests that the problem oflimited Aboriginal involvement in archaeologicalundertakings can be addressed by applying community-based methods to archaeology. These types ofprojects also bring many added benefits to botharchaeology and Aboriginal communities as a whole. The examination of community-based archaeology inCanada in this thesis is done through theorizing, examining practical examples and presenting commonthemes.
