Shelley Lee Long (born August 23, 1949) is an American actress best known for her role as Diane Chambers in the popular sitcom Cheers (which ran from 1982 to 1993.)Long was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana at 7:00 A.M. on Tuesday, August 23, 1949. The daughter of Evandine, a school teacher, and Leland Long, who worked in the rubber industry before becoming a teacher. She was active on her high school speech team, and in 1967 she won the National Forensic League National Championship in Original Oratory.
