Conceptual approaches from a transdisciplinary perspective in which bodies, intentionally or involuntarily, become shields.

Shielding offers a collection of conceptual approaches through which bodies, intentionally or involuntarily, become shields. Bodies take on an ambivalent status in the process: they serve as protection or a buffer and express resistance. At the same time, they turn and are turned into weapons when they intervene on the ground and politically, in war, conflicts, and through activism. The contributors address the idea of bodily integrity, both in a material sense and with regard to the symbolic and ethical relations that a body entangles. The book engages with ongoing debates around the re-evaluation of corporeality and embodiment in contemporary socio-political contexts.

Sandra Noeth ist Professorin am HZT Hochschulübergreifendes Zentrum Tanz Berlin (Universität der Künste Berlin/Hochschule für Schauspielkunst »Ernst Busch«) und arbeitet international als Kuratorin und Dramaturgin in freien und institutionellen Kontexten. Sie beschäftigt sich im Schwerpunkt mit ethischen und politischen Perspektiven auf Körperpraxis und -theorie und mit Dramaturgie im Kontext körperbasierter Darstellender Künste. Als Leiterin der Dramaturgie- und Research-Abteilung am Tanzquartier Wien (2009-2014) entwickelte sie Projekten zu Konzepten und Praktiken von Verantwortung, Religion, Integrität und Protest im Verbindung mit Körpern. Als Dozentin ist Sandra Noeth seit 2012 bei DOCH/Stockholm University of the Arts tätig und war 2015-16 Gastprofessorin im HWP-Programm bei Ashkal Alwan, Beirut.Sandra Umathum (Dr. phil.) ist Theater- und Performance-Wissenschaftlerin, Dramaturgin und Professorin für (angewandte) Tanz-Theorie, Choreografie und Performance am HZT Hochschulübergreifendes Zentrum für Tanz Berlin.Janez Jansa is a professor at the HZT-Inter-University Centre for Dance Berlin and a contemporary artist focusing on the relation between art and the social and political context.
