Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Tong Yang Xi or tongyangxi (Chinese: ), also known as Shim-pua marriage in Taiwanese (Taiwanese: sin-p -á, sim-p -á), was a tradition of arranged marriage dating in China, in which a poor family would sell a young daughter to a richer family as a servant or a caretaker, and in exchange, the girl would be married into the adopted family in time to come. The girl acted both as a daughter-in-law (to be married to the adopted family''s young son when they grow up) and free labour. The girl is usually a few years older than the male child she is to marry. Due to the lower-class status of the girls, discrimination was often present, and slavery-like treatment was not uncommon.
