The Battle of Baghdad that occurred in 1258 was an invasion, siege and sacking of the city of Baghdad, the capital of modern-day Iraq by the Ilkhanate forces along with other allied troops under Hulagu Khan, a grandson of Genghis Khan. The invasion destroyed Baghdad, the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate at the time. Anywhere from 100,000 to one million inhabitants were massacred and the city was sacked and burned. As a result Baghdad remained depopulated and in ruins for several centuries.
