Skip becomes stronger and weaker in accordance with an 11-year solar cycle; 2006 marked a bottom point of that cycle. Occasionally VHF signals skip. Some radio enthusiasts look for such signals and consider them TV and FM DX. Thermal inversions may also produce skipping.
