The Slavic dialects of Greece are the dialects of Macedonian and Bulgarian spoken by minority groups in the regions of Macedonia and Thrace in northern Greece. Usually, these dialects are classified as either Bulgarian or Pomak in Thrace, transitional dialects in East Macedonia, and Macedonian in Central and West Macedonia. Until the official codification of the Macedonian language in 1944 many linguists considered the dialects to be a part of the Bulgarian diasystem. This has remained the predominant opinion in Bulgarian linguistics and dialectology and the position of the Bulgarian governme.
