Social and Environmental Effects of Gold Mining in Ghana
Details
This research was carried out to provide much insight into the social and environmental effects of gold mining in Ghana with a special attention to Obuasi in the Adansi West District of the Ashanti Region. In the research, a total of 100 respondents were selected randomly and the descriptive analysis was used to demonstrate the results. The study revealed that truly mining has significant effects (both positive and negative) on the society, environment and by far the people in Obuasi. The study recommends that miners and community members should be educated on the need to use mosquito nets in their rooms to avoid malaria infections, the youth should be educated on the negative effects of mining on their health, on the society, on their economic activities and the environment, farmers whose farm lands are affected by mining activities should be properly compensated and the Government should provide employment avenues for the youth in Obuasi in order to reduce their involvement in illegal mining activities.
