Details
This book is premised on the collection and disposal methods of solid waste management in Zimbabwe. The author focuses on urbanization, economic and social constraints that have contributed and manifested in environmental problems. Environmental problems range from overcrowding, non-collection of refuse, dumping of solid waste, treatment facilities which have resulted in wide spread exposure to disease bearing waste. The book goes on to elucidate that rivers have become contaminated, seepage of hazardous materials from industry and waste dumps is increasingly the immediate environment, contaminating ground water sources such as bore holes and dams. The author discusses whether dumping sites of waste are environmentally friendly and recommends enactment of policy strategies for improved waste management systems. Finally, the author vividly describes different waste handling practices of industries, institutions, households and commercial sector. Integrated waste management system is mostly advocated by this book.
