High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Space Shuttle main engines (SSMEs) are reusable liquid-fuel rocket engines built by Rocketdyne. Each Space Shuttle ascent to orbit is propelled by three of the fourteen SSME engines currently used by the NASA Space Shuttle program.[1] After each flight, the three SSMEs are removed from the Space Shuttle orbiter, inspected and refurbished in preparation for reuse on a subsequent flight. The SSME is also designated as the RS-24 for engineering purposes. NASA recently put the main engines from three shuttles, Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour, up for sale, when they put the shuttles themselves up for sale, for prices between $400,000 and $800,000, but there were no takers, so they decided to offer them for free to anybody with the ability transport them.
