Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Spiro Mounds is one of the most important pre-Columbian archaeological sites in the United States. Located in Eastern Oklahoma near the modern town of Spiro, it is under the protection of the Oklahoma Historical Society and open to the public. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Spiro is the western-most known outpost of the Mississippian culture that arose and spread along the lower Mississippi River and its tributaries between the 800s and 1500s CE. As in other Mississippian-culture towns, the people built a number of large, complex earthworks. These included earthen mounds surrounding a large, planned and leveled central plaza, where important religious rituals, the politically and culturally significant game of chunkey, and other important community activities were carried out.
