Status and Prospects of Dairy Sector in India

Dairy sector has great importance for the upliftment of rural economy at national and state level. About 70 percent of the total rural population of the country sustains their livelihood from agriculture. Similarly, agriculture and dairy farming have been taking up as the main and the subsidiary occupation, by the large part of rural Punjab. However, it is observed that the share of agriculture and livestock to total GDP has been declining over the period of time due to emerging issue and challenges in this sector. This sector has been passing through high degree of competitiveness at global level.
