Stereotype threat is a theory that a person who is subject to inauspicious stereotypes (e.g. women in math and science and white males on the basketball court) are negatively affected (at least in testing environments) by the salience of their category membership. One published meta-analysis conducted by Walton & Spencer (2009) found significant evidence that stereotype threat impairs the standardized test performances of African Americans and women on the SAT. Grades and test scores systematically underestimate the intellectual ability of negatively stereotyped students. However, an unpublished meta-analysis of 55 published and unpublished studies shows mixed evidence of this effect.
