Steven Elder's birth name is Steven William Thomas Lawrence. He was born in the front room of 63 Elder Drive in the coal-mining community of Sunnyside, Rotherham, England. His grandfather, father and five uncles were all coal-miners at the Silverwood Colliery in Rotherham, England. His father, Clifford, was also a professional boxer. His mother, Margaret, was the youngest of ten children. Steven was educated at Valley Comprehensive School in Worksop, Nottinghamshire; and at Queen Mary, University of London where he was awarded a BA Hons degree in English Literature.
