Study of Aluminum Reinforced with SiC and Tungsten in a Brake Drum

The aim of this study is to compare the suitability of Aluminum alloy-Silicon Carbide alloy (Al-SiC and tungten alloy) brake drums to cast iron (CI) brake drums in automobile brake drum applications. For this, aluminium reinforced with SiC and Tungsten alloy was developed by stir casting method. By weight, Al-SiC and tungsten alloys were reinforced with 4% and 3% SiC particles and 3% and 4% tungsten particles, respectively. The Al-SiC and tungsten alloy brake drums were also subjected to heat treatment.The mechanical properties of alloy were studied by izod impact test and brinell hardness test.The impact strength and Brinell Hardess Number were measured using these tests.Tribologial properties were studied using wear and friction test. The brake drum coefficient of friction was primarily used to assess efficiency. The effect of braking on the brake drum's sliding surface was also investigated using a scanning electron microscope.
