Supportive Periodontal Therapy

The prevalence of periodontal disease and the high tooth mortality rate resulting from the disease have raised the need for effective treatment. Also, there is now strong evidence that periodontal disease can contribute to numerous health problems including pregnancy complications, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. The more often patients present for recommended supportive periodontal treatment (SPT), the less likely they are to lose teeth. Motivational techniques and reinforcement of the importance of the maintenance phase of treatment should be considered prior to perform definitive periodontal surgery.
