Survival and Resistance
Details
The aim of this text was to investigate prostitution as a survival strategy in urban contexts, with a focus on analyzing the risk of contamination by sexually transmitted diseases. However, the analysis extends beyond the health risk, exploring prostitution as a survival alternative.Methodologically, the study adopts a qualitative approach, allowing an intimate and empathetic approach between the researcher and the subjects studied. This approach favors an in-depth understanding of the motives, intentions and projects of sex workers, making actions, structures and social relationships meaningful.Observations took place at different times (from 8am to 9pm and from 10pm to 8am) in order to understand the dynamics and flows of negotiation at different times of the day. The study concludes that the practice of prostitution is a constant in all societies, with groups of women adopting this activity as a means of survival. The identity of these women is constructed within specific social contexts, which determine their positions, representations and choices.
