Suture and Suturing Techniques in Periodontal Surgeries

The careful approximation of the tissues is important as it helps in healing as long as there is no tension and a good blood supply. The method of approximation of the tissue edge varies depending on the site and tissue concerned, but for centuries the mainstay of such approximation has been the suture. The selection of suture material, especially in oral procedures, must be made carefully.This location differs from other body sites due to the constant presence of saliva, specific microbiota, high vascularization, as well as its functions related to speech, mastication, and swallowing. The search for more appropriate suture material has resulted in a variety of natural and synthetic, absorbable and non-absorbable sutures available commercially. Today's suture materials and needles, together with the rest of the instrumentation used, make a decisive contribution to this success.
