T Regulatory cells and Schistosoma
Details
Human schistosomiasis remains a serious health problem worldwide, affecting more than 240 million people and is second to malaria as the most devastating parasitic disease. Globally, a justified fear of upcoming resistance is discussed against the background of only one widely used drug for treatment. Chronic schistosomiasis is associated with hepatic fibrosis, which is controlled by immunoregulatory mechanisms, including induction of regulatory T cells (Tregs). There is an urgent need to know more about T reg functional capacity and interaction during human schistosomiasis. This work aimed to evaluate the relationship between the pathology and the two cell populations: regulatory T cell (T reg)(CD4+CD25+FOXP3+) and activated T cells (T act) (CD4+CD25+FOXP3-) in human Schistosomiasis mansoni. This research should help shed some light on this exciting interaction which will not only provide better understanding of immune-regulation in schistosomiasis for health care providers and all others interested in prevention and control of this disease, but also help to design new therapies to control and eradicate this chronic major health problem.
