Teaching lower grades in South Africa has been audially neglected focusing on the exit level referred to Matric. This has resulted in poor performance of young adults in Numeracy, writing (spelling) and literacy. For a country to thrive, it has to have a good foundation in these three aspects in lower grades of learning. Teachers and Learners grapple in understanding basic concepts to master because of the neglect of lower grades.The Education System of any country, I believe, should invest in lower grades in order to reap fruits in higher grades. Small beginnings make great endings. It is also of importance when teaching lower grades that numeracy, writing and literacy should be integrated not separated.
