The modern descendants of these devices are fully electronic and use a computer monitor instead of a printer. Usually called TDDs, such devices are still used by the hearing impaired for typed communications over ordinary telephone lines. Sometimes, these devices are referred to as TTYs but this creates an ambiguity because TTY can also refer to teleprinters in general.
