Temporomandibular Joint Pain

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain is a prevalent condition that affects the jaw joint and surrounding structures, leading to significant discomfort, functional limitations and diminished quality of life for affected individuals. The temporomandibular joint acts as a hinge connecting the jawbone (mandible) to the skull, allowing for essential functions such as chewing, speaking and swallowing. However, when dysfunction or pain arises in this joint, it can have a profound impact on an individual's daily activities and overall well being. Pain caused by temporomandibular disorders originates from either muscular or articular conditions or both. Distinguishing the precise source of the pain is a significant diagnostic challenge to clinicians, and effective management hinges on establishing a correct diagnosis.
