Details

Repetition, decoration, a story This book is a personal artistic examination of decorative and narrative pattern making through art practice from two cultural perceptions- Slavic and Australian. The existing differences between the two cultural backgrounds have been used to describe and debate how pattern is understood by the viewer or practiced by an artist in a particular chosen environment. The central argument focuses on pattern as a decorator and/or a narrator. This book takes the reader through the outcomes and changes in narrative pattern according to cultural context and exchange. By introducing Slavic pattern into contemporary (Australian) art practice, the artist examines how traditional cultural values and functions change. In discussing the processes of changes that occur in intercultural exchange, the artist draws opinions and observations from past artists and theorists such as William Morris, Lucien Henry and Jean-Francois Lyotard as well as from the artists own personal visual practice using pattern.
